John was up for a road trip, so we left early Tuesday morning and headed out for our 7+ hour drive. The event was in the late afternoon, and it was a lot of fun. There were close to 150 people there. We were on a panel with our friend Dink, who ran our orientation program while we were back in DC. It was great to see him and have dinner with him afterward.<\/p>\n<p>We drove back home the next day, not in as much of a hurry going home. We stopped in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Texas_Canyon\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Canyon<\/a> (above) for a photo op \u2013 it was so pretty with these huge rocks. We also went to a cheesey road side attraction called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadsideamerica.com\/story\/2023\" target=\"_blank\">The Thing<\/a>\u201d that John has been wanting to do since we first saw a billboard for it\u00a0in NM. And we had a delicious lunch just over the AZ-NM border.<\/p>\n<p>We started the week with book club Monday night at our house \u2013 we read Jeffrey Davidow\u2019s\u00a0\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/articles\/59802\/kenneth-maxwell\/the-us-and-mexico-the-bear-and-the-porcupine\" target=\"_blank\">The Bear and the Porcupine<\/a>,\u201d about Amb. Davidow\u2019s experiences as ambassador to Mexico. We had a great discussion.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the week was pretty low-key. Last Sunday night, we watched \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1084950\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Getting Married<\/a>,\u201d which was pretty good. We started \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0497465\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vicky Cristina Barcelona<\/a>\u201d last night.<\/p>\n<p>I just spent a lazy morning watching the men\u2019s championship of the French Open.<\/p>\n<p>John continues to ride bikes with his new El Paso buddies on Saturday and Sunday mornings \u2013 he\u2019s really enjoying it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas Canyon in AZ John and I were invited to attend a Foreign Service recruiting event in Scottsdale, Arizona, this week.
