…but someone’s gotta do it

Vallarta Sunset

Vallarta Sunset

I flew down to Puerto Vallarta mid-week to cover for our consular agent while she’s away on vacation. I really enjoy being in the small office; we have a great local staff and a busy schedule. In addition to the passport work, I visited three detained Americans and made a surprise visit to a nursing home to see six Americans who live there. All in a day’s work!

I was very happy that John decided to fly down Saturday morning to join me. We took the water taxi from Nuevo Vallarta where I’m staying down to Puerto Vallarta proper (much better way to travel than on land). We walked around for a bit until we couldn’t take the heat any longer, then we ducked into an air conditioned cafe for a glass of cold water. From there, we took a taxi up the hill to Allyn and Scotty’s condo to enjoy their company (and their gorgeous view!). Allyn is an old friend from college and is a hoot. We eventually made it down the hill to a lovely little restaurant called Layla’s – they have a creative menu and the food was really good. It was great to visit with the boys over a nice meal.

Today we packed in a lot. We started with breakfast outside overlooking the ocean, then hired a boat to take us through the mangrove canals. In addition to some lovely homes, we saw a young crocodile, about a million iguanas, and some good birds: pelicans, cormorants, great blue herons, snowy egrets, some sort of red-headed woodpecker, a kingfisher, a little green heron, and a lot of yellow-crowned night herons.

We got back to the hotel just in time for a massage on the beach – in an air-conditioned room with one-way glass looking out over the ocean.

Before we knew it, it was time for lunch and then time for John to grab a taxi back to the airport – a whirlwind trip but lots of fun!

So – it’s been a good week, all in all. Last Monday was a holiday and we went to see “The Martian” at the movie theatre across the street from us. We really enjoyed the movie – lots of fun.

Here’re a few shots from Vallarta.
